HELP! My fiancée doesn’t like their engagement ring! What can I do?

It’s a fear that anyone who has proposed will have had at the back of their mind, what if my loved one hates the engagement ring I’ve chosen?

This situation may not be very common, but it does happen, and the first thing you need to understand is that if the ring you’ve chosen isn’t met with the reaction you’d hoped, it really isn’t the end of the world.

So what do you need to do? Well, if you’re reading this article as part of your initial engagement ring research you’re already ahead of the game. There are lots of preventative measures you can take to avoid an unwelcome reaction, which are covered in our guide to buying the perfect engagement ring.

Sample Ring Bridal Collection

At Arabel Lebrusan, you can propose with a sample ring and then choose the perfect engagement ring together. Contact us to arrange a viewing.

If after reading our engagement ring guide you’re still lacking a little confidence then there is a very simple way you can be sure to propose with the right ring: don’t use one.

'While many see slipping a ring on their loved one’s finger as the main part of the engagement event, the real thing you need to worry about is if they’ll say “yes”.'

If you’re worried about not choosing the right ring, your loved one will be over the moon when you instead suggest that you go and choose a ring together. You’re showing them that their opinion is what counts and you’d rather they choose the ring they’ll be wearing forever than you risk getting it wrong.

Propose with a sample ring

Above: Ben proposed with a wax mould of the bespoke ring he designed. The ring was in the process of being made but the design could be altered at this stage, just in case.

So, you could forgo using a ring at all or if that moment of taking their hand in yours as you slip a ring on their finger means that much to you, you could use a temporary ring. Arabel Lebrusan offers a service when you can borrow a ring as a prop, until you find something more permanent. Read about our Sample Ring service here.

'But what if you’ve already proposed and your loved one has taken the difficult step of telling you that the ring just isn’t right? Again, this isn’t the end of the world either.'

As you’re about to start the union of marriage, which is based on trust and openness, you need to start off on the right foot. Your loved one will know how hard you’ve worked on your proposal, they won’t want to upset you, so be sure to help them feel that they can be honest without it causing a problem. Ask them what exactly is wrong; is it the stones, the type of metal, or the style? Asking these questions can help you both work out what sort of ring would be better.

At Arabel Lebrusan we offer a bespoke design service and work with you every step of the way. Our service is personal as jewellery is always personal.

Once you’ve spoken about the issues, get back in touch with the jeweller to explain the situation or maybe speak to another for a second opinion. Arabel Lebrusan, for example, can help find a solution that suits you both, regardless of where you purchased your original ring. This will have to incur an additional fee for design time and new materials, but this does open up a whole new opportunity to use the stones you’ve already purchased in a new bespoke ring design that is completely unique and suits you both.

If you’re looking to buy an engagement ring and are worried that you might choose the wrong one, or you’re at the stage where the ring you’ve chosen does need to be changed, then get in touch with Arabel about your concerns and let’s see if we can work through them together.
